Small Steps Create Big Shifts
Before we head into the “what and why”, let’s brief ourselves on the “how”. Making any changes to our daily, weekly, and monthly routines can be a genuine challenge. Learning basics on human behavior and change may help to reduce the friction we experience when implementing any changes. After all, exercise and a healthy diet don’t produce instant results or gratification, so it can feel easier to give up than to keep going.
It’s no secret that our motivations are our catalyst to creating changes in our behaviors. There are two main types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. When motivation comes from within, it is more likely to be long lasting. For example, wanting to build a strong core to prevent lower back pain throughout your day, instead of wanting to build a strong core to be super ripped. Both are valid, but one motivation carries more weight. At the end of the day, regardless of why, the most important thing is that we continue to strengthen our integrity through showing up week after week to get it done. If you tend to have an attitude of perfectionism, making consistent changes can also be difficult. Letting go of your belief that you MUST meet 100% of all your nutrition and fitness goals 100% of the time, will be your biggest friend. Remind yourself that have your whole life ahead of you, and that every year is just you vs you. Picture with me, our life’s journey truly is like hiking through the mountains- we must pace ourselves, taking necessary breaks in order to reach the top in one piece.
